Summary Review of The Breakdown

In fall of 2018, the world was graced with the incredible show known as CONCEPTION. With an incredible storyline so moving that it brings even the strongest men to tears, CONCEPTION wows anyone who remembers this show. Each character is filled with such expression and liveliness in their actions that it makes the show seemingly come alive, right out of the screen you watch it on. The voice acting is nothing to scoff at either, with each character reflecting the billions of hours spent practicing for this show, surely. And last but not least, the music. It's actually not that bad.

Sarcasm aside, don't watch this unless you really want to find yourself bored out of your mind except for maybe the occasional reference included in a joke.

The main studio behind, GONZO, has been around since February of 2000 working on classics like Saki and NHK ni Youkoso! However, CONCEPTION is so far their only Isekai anime.

3D

Very little obvious 3D is used, and thus doesn't break the mold for 3D animation in anime nor does it lessen the show by any means. It's honestly the last thing anyone would mind anyways with the story's absurd plot.

Special Effects

Special effects are used almost all for comedic purposes in the show. However, they really don't add much value to the movement or the gravity of the puns. But the worst offender in the entire show was somehow the first episode, where it almost feels like they didn't have enough money to pay the in-betweeners to fill out the rest of this cut; instead opting to just turn it into a framing sequence reserved for intense action...

CONCEPTION  Episode 1.
An incredibly odd choice for a sequence where he's being whisked away straight up...
Overall, the character art isn't as bad as one would think for how disappointing this show is. But on the other hand, they do have some weird quirks in drawing faces, where it sometimes feels like the coloring doesn't add enough depth to the character and makes the eyes look too far apart. And many cuts have really unflattering angles of character's faces, even when they're the focus of the scene.

CONCEPTION  Episode 8.
Unlucky.
Shockingly further, the background art in the show is incredibly diverse, with action taking place in a wide variety of locations. The unique ones typically come out for the drawn out puns the show insists on having, but they really pumped out a ton of different one time use backgrounds in tons of different environments, from flower fields, to The Bachelorette, to the Swiss Alps from Heidi

CONCEPTION  Episode 7.
Holy cow. Backgrounds are the most interesting part of this show!
As something of a parody, CONCEPTION, unfortunately disappoints on every single level. It starts off with a shocking statement of the MC (Itsuki)'s, longtime friend (Mahiru) being pregnant (not really), then randomly shipping them off to another world. After that, her issue is solved, and they meet the king of the lands who tells Itsuki that he must save the world before returning home. However, there's a catch, and it's that Itsuki must have 12 maidens bear his Star Children in a holy ritual known as the Love Ritual. However, instead of honeying through the birds and the bees, all Itsuki really has to do is give them a love tap and a special being known as the Star Child appears. Despite this extremely novel concept, the writing fails to bring out any charm in literally any of the characters. The writing had a huge opportunity to flip the script on its head with a more critical look at its medium due to its crazy setting and completely miffed it-- opting instead to go down the comedic harem ecchi route narrated by an annoying racoon to break the 4th wall at any given chance.

    Voice Acting

Voice acting in CONCEPTION has some ups as you can tell it's at least not an amateur experience, but does it completely stand out from other shows of the same ilk? Nope. Unfortunately, the most memorable character, Mana the racoon, also has an annoyingly memorable voice that literally yaps in almost every scene and is pretty grating after a while. If you enjoy the puns then it all works out, but it doesn't help the case for this show.

    Soundtrack

Nano's opening for this is too good to be true. Her powerful vocals and rock style really sweeps you off your feet and is instantly recognizable. The ending by Manami Numakura also isn't bad but doesn't contain that "wow" factor the opening does. An offside note: the animation for the ending is pretty unique and contrasts against the rest of the show quite interestingly. The background music is also pretty good and feels completely wasted on this show. Sound effects are good as well but seem pretty exclusive to the jokes.

I really didn't like this show, and recommend that you should probably just play the game instead. But it's still somehow not the worst Isekai I've seen...

    Thank you for reading!
