Summary

I'm definitely not an impartial reviewer for this series as I think its probably one of the greatest Isekai light novel series ever written. It's a gripping tale of war and power. Taking place in a WWII-esque world with magic, the juxtaposition of a young girl fighting bloody battles to survive all while leading troops of her own really pushes reader's to the edge of their seats; clutching their head as if to latch on to a helmet while a mage battalion bombs them from overhead. Carlo Zen delves deep into the psyche of a madman, a true pragmatist forced to pray to heavens for an obscene power just to survive. Seriously, give it a read.

Miscellaneous

Carlo Zen, the author, is incredibly well studied for this light novel. It's crazy seeing the University of Chicago's law school referenced so casually in a light novel of all things. Carlo Zen also tackles Freudian philosophy consistently throughout this series, between war and questioning God's existence, it's a truly overwhelming feat of learning for this series. The light novel also has a terrific usage of PoV. Constantly switching from Tanya's perspective of current events to future and other relative perspectives from different people truly makes use of the medium, whereas the anime only follows Tanya in her journey. On the flipside, Youjo Senki is a much harder to read light novel compared to 99% of other stories in this genre, most of which are slop for relaxing. But it really gets you thinking about the insanity of Tanya and everything she goes through.
